Pretender – Kingdom of Jerusalem
There are several pretenders to the throne but the one with
best right is Philip VI King of Spain. In 1277, Mary of Antioch, granddaughter
of Elizabeth I, queen of Jerusalem, sold the title to Charles of Anjou, King of
Naples, with Papal approval. In 1291 the Kingdom of Jerusalem disappeared but
the title stayed linked to the Kingdom of Naples. In 1504 Fernando the Catholic
was titled King of Naples and the brought to Spain the rights to the Kingdom of
Jerusalem. As Fernando’s descendant and rightful inheritor, Philip VI is not
only King of Spain but also King of Jerusalem.
